Seja a astrologia, ou a religião, ou o que quer que seja, quero viver num mundo onde as pessoas pensem por si mesmas, ceticamente, pedindo provas. Não que a astrologia seja prejudicial, e provavelmente não seja, mas se quiser viver pensando que esta tudo bem, acreditar numa coisa somente porque acredita, sem provas. Você está perdendo tanto... É uma experiência tão maravilhosa viver num mundo e compreender porque vive nele, e o que o faz funcionar, compreender as verdadeiras estrelas, a astronomia que é algo empobrecedor reduzir-lo a insignificância da astrologia. E penso que podemos dizer o mesmo da religião. O universo é um lugar grandioso, bonito, maravilhoso e seria mesquinho paroquial e degradante acreditar em demônios e em criadores sobrenaturais.

O escravo é uma propriedade como o gado o é, e não como uma coisa inanimada. Sua liberdade de movimentos lembra a de um animal ao qual se permite pastar e fundar algo como uma família. O verdadeiro caráter de uma coisa é sua impenetrabilidade. Ela pode ser chutada e empurrada, mas é incapaz de armazenar ordens. A definição jurídica do escravo como coisa e como propriedade é, pois, enganosa. Ele é um animal e uma propriedade . É antes com um cão que se pode comparar um escravo. O cão capturado foi retirado do seio de sua matilha: foi isolado . Está sob as ordens de seu dono. Abre mão de suas próprias iniciativas, na medida em que estas contrariem tais ordens, e, como recompensa por isso, é por ele alimentado. Alimento e ordem possuem assim, tanto para o cão quanto para o escravo, uma mesma fonte - seu dono - e, nesse sentido, não é totalmente inadequado comparar-lhes o status ao das crianças.
