Na imagem que faz de si mesmo, o Ocidente é um mundo “livre”, democrático e racional, ou seja, o melhor dos mundos possíveis. Do seu ponto de vista, esse mundo é pragmático e aberto, sem pretensões utópicas ou totalitárias. Cada um deve “ser feliz segundo seu próprio modo de ser”, de acordo com a promessa de tolerância feita pelo Iluminismo europeu. Os representantes desse mundo se dizem realistas. Afirmam que suas instituições, seu pensamento e sua ação encontram-se em harmonia com as “leis naturais” da sociedade, com a “realidade” atual. O socialismo, pelo que ouvimos, desmoronou porque era “irrealista”. Junto com o socialismo, foi definitivamente enterrada toda utopia de uma mudança fundamental da sociedade. E os antigos críticos do way of life ocidental agora se acotovelam nas bilheterias do “realismo” para comprarem a tempo seu ingresso na economia de mercado globalizada. A religião libera o homem da difícil tarefa do pensamento, ao oferecer explicações fáceis e cômodas para todos os fatos e ao desobrigá-lo de submetê-lo ao controle da experiencia e da interpretação histórica.
