E agora veja só mais um lindo quadro. Um ano, na época do Natal, meu jornal diário, The Independent, estava procurando uma imagem apropriada para período natalino e encontrou uma de um ecumenismo reconfortante, uma peça escolar sobre a natividade. Os três reis magos eram representados, como dizia, radiante, a legenda, por Shadbreet (sikh), Musharaff (muçulmano) e Adele (cristã), todos de quatro anos de idade.

Lindo? Reconfortante? Não, não é, nenhum dos dois; é grotesco. Como qualquer pessoa decente pode achar certo rotular crianças de quatro anos com as opiniões cósmicas e teológicas de seus pais? Para entender, imagine uma foto idêntica, com a legenda modificada para o seguinte: "Shadbreet (feminista), Musharaff (marxista) e Adele (anarquista), todos de quatro anos de idade". Não seria essa legenda uma candidata a cartas iradas de protesto? Certamente. Mas, por causa do status estranhamente privilegiado da religião, não se ouviu nem um pio, como não se ouve em nenhuma ocasião semelhante. Só imagine a revolta se a legenda dissesse: "Shadbreet (ateu), Musharaff (agnóstico) e Adele (humanista laica), todos de quatro anos de idade". Os pais não poderiam até ser investigados para saber se eles estavam aptos a criar os seus filhos?
