Carta a uma nação cristã


Não é, portanto, exagero dizer que, se a cidade de Nova York de repente fosse substituída por uma bola de fogo, uma porcentagem significativa da população americana veria um lado bom no cogumelo de fumaça que ser formaria em seguida, já que ele lhes sugeriria que a melhor coisa que pode acontecer está prestes a acontecer: o retorno de Cristo. Devia ser de uma obviedade ofuscante que esse tipo de crença não nos ajuda muito a criar um futuro duradouro para nós mesmos - em termos sociais, econômicos, ambientais ou geopolíticos. Imagine as consequências da possibilidade de qualquer componente significativo do governo dos Estados Unidos realmente acreditar que o mundo está prestas a acabar e que esse fim será glorioso. O fato de quase metade da população americana acreditar nisso, com base puramente no dogma religioso, deveria ser considerado uma emergência intelectual.

Ouvindo o silêncio

Comumente pensamos no silêncio como negativo, a mera ausência de som. Silêncios - é melhor pensar no plural -  podem ser longos ou curtos. Diferem em qualidade, bem como em quantidade. Podem ser naturais ou culturais, por exemplo, normais ou patológicos. Podem ser voluntários ou forçados, espontâneos ou estratégicos, quentes ou frios - como os ingleses às vezes dizem, "um silêncio de pedra". A ausência de fala pode igualmente expressar reserva ou humildade. Um silêncio desdenhoso ou insolente precisa ser distinguido de um silêncio ameaçador. As pessoas ficam sem fala por espanto, constrangimento ou até fúria. Em suma, o silêncio não é um fenômeno puramente negativo. O silêncio do professor experimentado é diferente também dos exemplos que acabei de citar. É a arte de fazer uma pergunta difícil e então dar ao aluno tempo suficiente para meditar, para elaborar uma resposta.
