Eles não vêem longe o bastante, não vêem abaixo de si: mas, para poder falar sobre valor e desvalor, é preciso ver quinhentas convicções abaixo de si - atrás de si... Um espírito que quer coisas grandes, que quer também os meios para elas, é necessariamente um cético. Ser livre de todo tipo de convicções faz parte da força, poder olhar livremente. [...] O homem da fé, o crente de todo tipo, é necessariamente um homem dependente. O "crente" não pertence a si, pode apenas ser meio, tem de ser usado, necessita de alguém que o use. Todo tipo de fé é, em si mesmo, uma expressão de abnegação, de alienação de si. Não ver muitas coisas, em nenhum ponto ser imparcial, ser inteiramente partidário, ter uma ótica estrita e necessária em todos os valores. O "crente" não é livre para ter alguma consciência quanto à questão do "verdadeiro" e do "não verdadeiro": ser honesto nesse ponto seria a sua imediata ruína. O condicionamento patológico de sua ótica faz do convicto um fanático. Os fanáticos são pitorescos, a humanidade prefere ver gestos a ouvir razões.

Ouvindo o silêncio

Comumente pensamos no silêncio como negativo, a mera ausência de som. Silêncios - é melhor pensar no plural -  podem ser longos ou curtos. Diferem em qualidade, bem como em quantidade. Podem ser naturais ou culturais, por exemplo, normais ou patológicos. Podem ser voluntários ou forçados, espontâneos ou estratégicos, quentes ou frios - como os ingleses às vezes dizem, "um silêncio de pedra". A ausência de fala pode igualmente expressar reserva ou humildade. Um silêncio desdenhoso ou insolente precisa ser distinguido de um silêncio ameaçador. As pessoas ficam sem fala por espanto, constrangimento ou até fúria. Em suma, o silêncio não é um fenômeno puramente negativo. O silêncio do professor experimentado é diferente também dos exemplos que acabei de citar.
